The details in Plain English
This site allows you to send me your name, email address, and website for the purposes of signing up for my email list (to receive my blog posts), to leave comments, or to contact me directly. I will share this information only with the apps I use to manage these (Akismet, MailChimp, Gravity Forms, Zapier).
I may use affiliate links throughout this site. These links may not be identified in the post, but they will all be for products or sites on which I would shop myself. By clicking one of these links, I will get a few pennies to help me pay for the running of this site. I will not get any kind of record of who clicked the link or what you bought when you got there, so your privacy is safe. (So go on with your bad self and buy your Snuggie… no one will know about it.)
Any personal and/or contact information provided to me will be kept private. I hate spammers as much as you do, so I will do everything in my power to keep that from happening. I won’t be adding you to my Christmas Card list (I don’t even send cards to my own family), I won’t be standing outside your window holding a boom box, and I won’t sell or disclose your information to any other company.
You can unsubscribe from my list at any time by clicking the Unsubscribe link at the bottom of any email I send you. You can also contact me through my contact form if you’d like me to delete any information I have collected from you on this site.
What personal data we collect and why we collect it
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Media
If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.
Contact forms
If you fill out my contact form on this site, the entire contents of the form along with your name, email and IP address are stored on the server as well as emailed to the site administrator. This is to ensure a copy of the form is always saved in case the email does not get delivered properly.
Cookies
If you leave a comment on my site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.
If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
Analytics
Who we share your data with
This site uses Akismet, MailChimp, Zapier, and Gravity Forms, so your information may be passed through those apps. It will not be shared with anyone else.
Our website also uses Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google, Inc. (“Google”). The information generated by the cookie about your use of our website (including your IP address) will be transmitted to and stored by Google on servers in the United States. Google will use this information for the purpose of evaluating your use of our website, compiling reports on website activity for website operators and providing other services relating to website activity and internet usage. Google may also transfer this information to third parties where required to do so by law, or where such third parties process the information on Google’s behalf. How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users who register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
Where we send your data
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
